The lightweight, portable neutron radiameter

Developed by the Department of Radiological Devices, received a special award from the Japan Atomic Energy Society for its cutting-edge technology.

This award is intended to commend academic and technical achievements in development research for the peaceful use of atomic energy. The Special Award is the highest award for technology. Weighing around 2 kg (5 kg less than conventional products), this radiation meter reduces the load carried by engineers during field measurements.

The team from the Department of Radiological Devices has developed an innovative technology. Instead of the rare gas helium-3, the method uses an organic gas mixture consisting mainly of methane. This makes it possible to measure neutron dose rate at lower cost and with greater stability.

In the future, this technology is expected to be applied not only in the nuclear power generation sector, but also in the medical sector, for example in hospitals for cancer treatment.
